Purpose - What is a Slam Dunk? - Presenters
Purpose:
This wiki was directly created for NECC 2009 in Washington, DC and the BYOL presentation "Relevant Research Is a Slam Dunk Using MS PowerPoint" on June 29 from 2-3pm in WWCC 150A where participants gain hands-on experience designing a single-day research lesson using Microsoft PowerPoint. Jamie McKenzie’s Slam Dunk! model has your students investigating and answering higher-level questions.
The purpose is also to continue the conversation and professional development after the conference. Participants at NECC 2009 (or any educator) are welcome to post their Slam Dunk lesson(s), questions about how Deep Creek Magnet Middle, BCPS implements the Slam Dunk lesson model, or comments on how to improve this professional development.
What is a Slam Dunk Lesson Model?
A 5-step research project designed to be completed by students during a more manageable amount of time (1-5 class meetings).
Step 1. Question: revalvant, higher-level question to answer (objective or purpose) The question should ask students to: analyze, select, compare, infer, debate, design, modify, create, invent, combine, judge, convince, rank, support, or conclude (just to name a few ideas).
Step 2. Information Sources: One or two valid / reliable sources of information (either provided by curriculum or online). Please visit the resources page on this wiki for information source ideas: Resources.
Step 3. Activity: A way for students to organize their ideas and take notes. DCMS likes Cornell Note-taking Method. Here are directions for creating a template in Word: http://www.timeatlas.com/mos/5_Minute_Tips/General/Word_Templates_and_Cornell_Note_Taking/
Step 4. Assessment: Product for students to demonstrate new understanding from research. Please visit the examples page on this wiki to gain ideas for assessment products: Example Slam Dunks.
Step 5. Enrichment: Extensions to reflect and build on new understandings.
